Zyrtec
® (
cetirizine hydrochloride) is an over-the-counter medication licensed to treat
allergy symptoms and itching due to hives. By blocking the effects of histamine, the drug can help relieve itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy nose or throat.
There are three different forms of Zyrtec: oral tablets, chewable tablets, and syrup. These various products come in several strengths and are approved for use in both adults and children. Some people need to take this medicine all year long, while others only need to take it during allergy season.
Although Zyrtec products are available without a prescription, you should talk to your healthcare provider before using this drug if you have liver disease, kidney disease, or any
allergies (including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives).
