What Is Zyrtec Prescribed For?

Many people may wonder, "What is
Zyrtec prescribed for?" Zyrtec® (cetirizine hydrochloride) is a medication approved for the treatment of allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, itchy or water eyes, runny nose, and itchy nose or throat. It is also licensed to treat itching due to hives (which may or may not be caused by allergies).

Allergic reactions are caused by the release of histamine from certain cells in the body, and histamine is also responsible for the formation of hives. As an antihistamine, Zyrtec blocks histamine to relieve symptoms of allergies and to alleviate the itching associated with hives.

Technically, this drug is no longer available in prescription form; it can now be found over the counter.
