Generic Xyzal

Generic Xyzal is currently unavailable because it is under the protection of a patent. The earliest possible date that a generic version could become available is May 2010, when the patent expires. Until there is an approved generic version available, you should not purchase any "so-called" generic Xyzal products, because these medicines are potentially fake, substandard, and may be dangerous.

Generic Xyzal: An Overview

Xyzal® (levocetirizine dihydrochloride) is a prescription medication approved to treat allergies and hives. It belongs to a group of medications known as non-sedating antihistamines (which are less likely to cause drowsiness).

Xyzal is manufactured jointly by UCB, Inc. and sanofi-aventis. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Xyzal from being manufactured in the United States. However, if you search the Internet for "generic Xyzal," you may find a number of companies selling it. The fact is that these medicines are fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous. There may be generic Xyzal available from another country, but there is really no way of knowing if you are getting genuine Xyzal or not. Therefore, you should not buy any generic Xyzal until there is an approved version available.

When Will Generic Xyzal Be Available?

UCB, Inc.
holds the exclusive rights to market Xyzal until at least May 2010. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of the drug could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend the exclusivity period beyond 2010. This could include things such as other patents for specific Xyzal uses or lawsuits. Once the patent expires, several companies will likely begin manufacturing a generic Xyzal drug.
