Sudafed® (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) is an over-the-counter medication often used for the treatment of nasal congestion due to allergies or the common cold. It can also be used to relieve sinus congestion and pressure. By stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the lining of the nose and sinuses, the drug can cause the blood vessels to constrict (which allows less fluid to leave the blood vessels and decreases inflammation). Potential side effects include heart palpitations, insomnia, and nervousness.
