Sudafed Effects

Sudafed® (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) is a decongestant medication available without a prescription. There are several beneficial effects of Sudafed; the drug can be used for treating nasal congestion due to allergies (such as hay fever) or the common cold, relieving sinus congestion and pressure, and promoting nasal and sinus draining.

On occasion, your healthcare provider may also recommend Sudafed for treating other conditions (this would be known as an "off-label" use). Off-label uses of Sudafed include the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Fluid buildup in the ear (such as with an ear infection)
  • A painful, prolonged erection of the penis (priapism)
  • Involuntary leakage of urine during various activities, such as laughing or coughing (known as stress urinary incontinence).
