It may not be safe to use phenylephrine during pregnancy, as this medication may cause problems. There is some concern that phenylephrine may cause constriction of blood vessels in the uterus, possibly leading to inadequate oxygen delivery to the fetus. Also, phenylephrine may increase the risk of dangerously high blood pressure and might cause certain birth defects, such as clubfoot or an umbilical hernia.
