What Is Oxymetazoline Nasal Spray?
Oxymetazoline nasal spray (
Afrin®, Nostrilla
®,
Sudafed OM™, and many others) is a non-prescription medication used to temporarily relieve nasal congestion due to the
common cold,
allergies, or
sinus infections or inflammation. Because prolonged use can actually worsen congestion, this nasal spray should not be used for more than three days in a row.
Potential Side Effects of the Drug
Just like any medicine, oxymetazoline nasal spray can cause side effects.
However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
Possible side effects of oxymetazoline nasal spray include but are not limited to:
- Temporary burning or stinging
- Sneezing
- Worsening of congestion with prolonged use (see Afrin Addiction).
