Generic Omnaris

At this time, generic Omnaris is not available in the United States. The drug is currently protected by a patent that prevents any generic versions from being produced. The earliest possible date that any generic Omnaris products could become available is October 2017, when the first patent for the prescription nasal spray expires.

Generic Omnaris: An Overview

Omnaris™ (ciclesonide) is a prescription steroid nasal spray approved to treat nasal allergies (known medically as allergic rhinitis). It can be used to treat seasonal allergies or year-round allergies (known medically as perennial allergies). Omnaris belongs to a group of medications known as corticosteroids (or just "steroids" for short).

Omnaris is manufactured by Nycomed US, Inc. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Omnaris from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Omnaris Be Available?

The first patent for Omnaris currently expires in October 2017. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of the drug could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend the exclusivity period beyond 2017. This could include such things as other patents for specific Omnaris uses or lawsuits. Once the patent expires, several companies will likely begin manufacturing a generic Omnaris drug.

Because Omnaris is not available in generic form, your insurance company may require you to try a generic steroid nasal spray before they will cover Omnaris for you (these situations are becoming more common as insurance companies try to limit rising healthcare costs). In this situation, your pharmacist and healthcare provider can help you choose a nasal spray that will be covered by your plan.
