More Information on Nasonex Indications

Nasonex and Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths in the nose and sinuses. While not usually dangerous, they often cause bothersome symptoms, such as congestion and a runny nose. Typically, nasal polyps are not painful. Most cases of nasal polyps are related to nasal allergies, although cystic fibrosis can also cause nasal polyps.
Nasal polyps can be treated by medications (usually nasal steroids, like Nasonex) or surgery.

How Does Nasonex Work?

Nasal allergies and nasal polyps are both caused by inflammation. Nasonex is a corticosteroid, or simply "steroid" for short. Steroids can have many different effects in the body, including anti-inflammatory effects. Steroids decrease inflammation by limiting the body's ability to produce an immune system reaction.
Steroids can be very effective at treating conditions such as allergies and nasal polyps. However, long-term use of steroids can cause bothersome and sometimes serious side effects, and this limits the usefulness of many steroids. Because Nasonex is a nasal spray, its effects are generally limited to the nose. This helps prevent many of the long-term side effects of steroids.

Nasonex Use in Children

Nasonex is approved to treat seasonal or perennial nasal allergies in children as young as two years old. For preventing seasonal allergies, Nasonex is approved for children age 12 and older. Nasonex is not approved for treating nasal polyps in children. Talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Nasonex in children.

Off-Label Nasonex Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Nasonex for something other than nasal allergies or polyps. Currently, off-label Nasonex uses include the treatment of the following conditions:
  • Nasal symptoms, such as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, or itching unrelated to allergies (known medically as nonallergic or vasomotor rhinitis)
  • Sinus infections.
