Allergies Home > Zyrtec Medication Information

Zyrtec® (cetirizine hydrochloride) is a medication often used for treating itchy or watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and other allergy symptoms. It can also be used to help relieve itching due to hives, which may or may not be caused by allergies.

Even though you can now get over-the-counter Zyrtec, medication information should still be discussed with your healthcare provider to help ensure safe treatment. You should consult your healthcare provider before using this antihistamine product if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or any allergies (including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives).

Zyrtec comes in several different forms, including tablets, chewable tablets, and syrup. It is usually taken by mouth once daily and can be taken all year long (although some people only need to take it during allergy season).
