Allergies Home > Qnasl

Available by prescription only, Qnasl is licensed to treat seasonal or year-round allergies. This medicine is the first "dry" nasal steroid product, as it does not typically cause dripping down the back of the throat and other symptoms caused by water-based nasal sprays. This medication is used once a day, with two sprays in each nostril. Side effects include headaches, nosebleeds, and nasal discomfort.

What Is Qnasl?

Qnasl™ (beclomethasone nasal aerosol) is a prescription steroid nasal spray licensed to treat both seasonal allergies and allergies that occur all year long (known as perennial allergies). Specifically, Qnasl can be used to treat sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, and nasal itching due to allergies (known medically as allergic rhinitis).
Qnasl is the first "dry" nasal steroid product available in the United States. Some people may prefer Qnasl over the traditional, water-based nasal sprays, as it does not usually result in fluid dripping down the back of the throat or out of the nose.

Who Makes This Medication?

Qnasl is made by 3M Drug Delivery Systems for Teva Respiratory, LLC.

How Does Qnasl Work?

Allergies occur as the result of the immune system's reaction to normally harmless substances that do not bother most people. This immune system reaction is known as inflammation, and involves several different types of cells and several different chemicals in the body.
Qnasl is a corticosteroid, or simply "steroid" for short. Steroids can have many different effects in the body, including anti-inflammatory effects. Steroids decrease inflammation by limiting the body's ability to produce an immune system reaction. They can be quite effective at treating conditions such as allergies.
However, long-term use of steroids can cause bothersome and sometimes serious side effects, and this limits the usefulness of many steroids. Because Qnasl is a nasal spray, its effects are generally limited to the nose. This helps prevent many of the long-term steroidal side effects.
Although Qnasl is a steroid, it is not the same type of steroid used to enhance athletic performance or to increase muscle mass. These steroids are completely different from the type used in nasal sprays like Qnasl.
