Hydrocodone Polistirex/Chlorpheniramine Polistirex

Available by prescription only, hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex is specially designed to treat upper respiratory symptoms caused by allergies or the common cold. It is an extended-release medication that contains both a narcotic cough suppressant and an antihistamine. The drug comes in liquid form and is only taken twice daily, with about 12 hours between doses. Possible side effects include nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness.

Hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex (Tussionex® Pennkinetic®) is a prescription medication approved to treat coughing and other upper respiratory symptoms, such as a runny nose and sneezing, caused by allergies or the common cold. It is a combination medicine that contains an antihistamine and a narcotic cough suppressant.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well.
 
Common side effects seen with hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex include but are not limited to:
 
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Nervousness or excitability
  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat.
     
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
