A food allergy is the immune system's response to a specific food that may be harmless to others. An allergic reaction to food can take place from within a few minutes up to an hour. The most common foods to cause allergies in adults are shellfish, peanuts, fish, and eggs. For children, the main culprits are eggs, milk, peanuts, soy, and wheat. A food allergy may cause hives or vomiting, and may sometimes be serious enough to require medical attention.
