It is now possible to buy Elestat (epinastine ophthalmic solution) in generic form. The generic version is currently available in one strength and is made by various manufacturers. The FDA considers the generic version equivalent to the brand-name version.
Can I Buy Generic Elestat?
Elestat® (epinastine ophthalmic solution) is a prescription eye drop approved for preventing itching due to eye allergies (known medically as allergic conjunctivitis). It belongs to a group of medications known as antihistamines. Brand-name Elestat is manufactured by Allergan, Inc. However, it is also available in generic form.
Availability of Generic Elestat
Generic Elestat (sold under the name Epinastine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution) is available in one strength (0.05%) in a 5-mL bottle. At this time, it is made by various manufacturers, such as Cypress Pharmaceutical, Inc., and Apotex Corporation.
Is Epinastine a Generic Elestat?
Generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AT" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. The epinastine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution currently available has an "AT" rating, meaning it should be equivalent to Elestat.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
