Allergies Home > Generic Claritin Eye

Currently, Claritin Eye (ketotifen ophthalmic solution) is available in both brand-name and generic forms. The generic versions of Claritin Eye come in the same strength as the brand-name product. Several other brand-name drugs are considered equivalent to Claritin Eye, including Zaditor and Alaway. All are used to treat eye itching related to specific allergies.

Can I Buy Generic Claritin Eye?

Claritin® Eye (ketotifen ophthalmic solution) is a nonprescription antihistamine eye drop approved for treating itching of the eyes caused by allergies to ragweed, pollen, grass, and animal dander or hair.

Claritin Eye is manufactured by Schering-Plough HealthCare Products, Inc. The patents for ketotifen have expired, and generic versions are available. In fact, generic versions of ketotifen eye drops were available long before Claritin Eye was marketed.

The active ingredient in Claritin Eye (ketotifen) is not the same as the active ingredient in other Claritin products (loratadine).

Strengths of Generic Claritin Eye

Just like brand-name Claritin Eye, generic ketotifen eye drops are available in only one strength -- ketotifen 0.025% (equivalent to ketotifen fumarate 0.035%).

Who Makes the Generic Versions?

Generic Claritin Eye is made by a few different manufacturers, including:

  • Alcon Laboratories
  • Apotex, Inc.
  • Akorn, Inc.

Several other brand-name products are essentially equivalent to Claritin Eye. These products include:

  • Zyrtec® Itchy Eye Drops (made by McNeil Consumer Healthcare)
  • Alaway® (made by Bausch & Lomb, Inc.)
  • Zaditor® (made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation).
