Allergies Home > Generic Allegra-D

The 24-hour strength of Allegra-D (fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine) is now available in generic form. As with the brand-name version of the drug, generic Allegra-D must be purchased "behind the counter." The 12-hour strength of Allegra-D is still sold as a brand-name product only.

Can I Buy Generic Allegra-D?

Allegra-D® (fexofenadine and pseudoephedrine) is a nonprescription medication that has been licensed for the relief of seasonal allergy symptoms (hay fever). Although Allegra-D was once a prescription-only medication, it is now available without a prescription.

Like all nonprescription medications that contain pseudoephedrine, Allegra-D can be purchased only "behind the counter." This means that it can be purchased only from pharmacies, and it is stored in the actual pharmacy, not out with other nonprescription products. You must present valid identification, and your purchase will be logged in a special logbook. There is a limit to how much pseudoephedrine (in any product) you can purchase per day and per month.

Brand-name Allegra-D is manufactured by sanofi-aventis Pharmaceuticals. However, a generic version is also available (at least in the 24-hour strength).

Strengths of Generic Allegra-D

Generic Allegra-D is available in the 24-hour strength -- fexofenadine 180 mg and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride 240 mg. The 12-hour strength is not available in generic form at this time.

Interestingly, when Allegra-D was a prescription-only medication, only the 12-hour strength was available in generic form.

Who Makes Generic Allegra-D?

Currently, there is one maker for all the different "store brand" generic versions of Allegra-D -- Dr. Reddy's Laboratories.
