Lastacaft™ (
alcaftadine) is a prescription eye drop approved for treating eye itching caused by
allergies. It is used just once a day.
Who Makes This Medication?
Lastacaft is manufactured by Vistakon Pharmaceuticals, LLC.
Lastacaft belongs to a class of drugs known as H1 receptor antagonists, commonly known as antihistamines. It works by blocking a specific type of histamine receptor in the body known as H1 receptors. Because allergic reactions are partly caused by the release of histamine from certain cells in the body, Lastacaft can help relieve or prevent
allergy symptoms.
In addition to blocking histamine receptors, Lastacaft may decrease the release of histamine from cells in the body.
In clinical studies, Lastacaft was shown to relieve itching of the eyes due to allergies.
The studies showed that Lastacaft was more effective than a placebo eye drop (the same formulation, but without the active ingredient) for relieving eye itching.
These studies showed that Lastacaft was effective within 3 minutes and lasted as long as 16 hours after a dose.
