Side effects may include sedation, sleepiness, and dizziness.

What Is Karbinal ER?

Karbinal™ ER (carbinoxamine extended-release oral suspension) is a prescription medication approved to treat the symptoms of a wide variety of allergic conditions, including seasonal allergies, allergic conjunctivitis (eye allergies), and skin allergies. It is also used in combination with other medicines to treat a severe allergic reaction known as an anaphylactic reaction.

Karbinal ER contains carbinoxamine in an extended-release (ER) form, which means the drug is released slowly into the body. This allows the medicine to be dosed just twice a day. Carbinoxamine is also the active ingredient in a regular-release medication (Palgic®), which is taken three to four times a day.

How Does Karbinal ER Work?

Karbinal ER is an H1 receptor antagonist, commonly referred to as an antihistamine. It works by blocking a specific type of receptor in the body known as the histamine-1 (H1) receptor. Histamine is responsible for many of the symptoms of allergic reactions. Karbinal ER blocks histamine receptors, preventing histamine from binding to them, and thus preventing allergy symptoms.

Karbinal ER also blocks acetylcholine receptors. This leads to some of the bothersome "anticholinergic" side effects, such as dry mouth, constipation, and difficulty urinating. It also helps produce a "drying" effect, which can be helpful for some allergy symptoms, such as a runny nose.
