Specific Precautions and Warnings for Hydrocodone Polistirex/Chlorpheniramine Polistirex

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to taking this drug include the following:
 
  • This medication can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impair mental and physical abilities. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex affects you. Your reflexes and reaction times may be significantly altered, even if you feel fine.
     
  • Like other narcotic medications, hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex affects the area of the brain that controls breathing. Therefore, it may cause potentially life-threatening irregular, slow, and shallow breathing. These breathing problems are more likely to occur when this product is taken with certain other medications (see Drug Interactions With Hydrocodone Polistirex/Chlorpheniramine Polistirex) or at higher doses, as well as in people who have lung disease. Do not take more of this medication than is prescribed, even if your symptoms are not controlled.
     
  • It is important that you use an accurate measuring device, such as a syringe or medicine cup, when measuring out this medication to avoid taking too much. A household spoon is not accurate enough and should not be used. Your pharmacist can give you an appropriate measuring device.
     
  • Hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex contains an antihistamine medication. Antihistamines are also available over-the-counter (OTC), without a prescription. Do not take any over-the-counter cough or cold product while you are taking hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex without first talking to your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Taking more than one antihistamine may increase your risk for side effects.
     
  • This medication can cause increased pressure in the skull (intracranial pressure) and potentially life-threatening breathing problems in people with head injuries or those who already have high intracranial pressure. Hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex should only be used with extreme caution in such circumstances.
     
  • Hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex can interfere with the diagnosis of many conditions that cause severe abdominal (stomach) pain.
     
  • This drug can slow down the digestive tract, potentially leading to severe constipation or blocked bowels. This side effect is more likely to occur in people who already have intestinal motility problems. Constipation is more likely to occur if you use the medication for a long time. Laxatives can be used to prevent or treat constipation. Talk to your doctor about whether a laxative is a good choice for you before you begin using hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex.
     
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects of hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex, including drowsiness, constipation, problems urinating, and breathing problems. In addition, this medication may increase the risk of falling in older adults. If you are an older adult, your healthcare provider may monitor you more closely while you take this drug.
     
  • Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex, especially breathing problems. In addition, children may experience agitation or excitement instead of drowsiness. This medication should not be used in children younger than six years old because of the risk for serious breathing problems.
     
  • Hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex is a narcotic medication with significant potential for abuse. Therefore, if you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, this may not be a good medication for you. Do not take the drug more frequently, longer, or at a higher dose than prescribed. If you feel you may be developing a problem with this drug, please seek help from your healthcare provider.
     
  • Hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex can interact with several other medications (see Drug Interactions With Hydrocodone Polistirex/Chlorpheniramine Polistirex).
     
  • Hydrocodone polistirex/chlorpheniramine polistirex is considered a pregnancy Category C medication. This means that it may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown (see Tussionex and Pregnancy).
     
  • It is unknown if this medicine passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to taking the drug (see Tussionex and Breastfeeding).
