Goldenseal Drug Interactions

Even though it is a
dietary supplement, goldenseal can potentially interfere with many medications. Unfortunately, there is little definitive information available about these interactions with goldenseal. Early research suggests that goldenseal may affect several different liver enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down many different medications, hormones, toxins, and various other substances in the body.

If you take any prescription medications, check with your healthcare provider before taking goldenseal. This is especially important for life-saving medications (such as HIV medications), medications with dangerous side effects (such as arrhythmia medications), or those for which effectiveness is very important (such as birth control pills). In all cases, do not forget to mention goldenseal when your healthcare provider asks about the medications and supplements you take.
