Although most people do not appear to experience any problems while taking goldenseal, side effects are possible. However, short-term use of the herb seems to be unlikely to cause serious side effects in most healthy adults. Possible bothersome (but usually not serious) side effects of goldenseal include vomiting and nausea. Potentially serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction (such as a rash or swelling) or signs of kernicterus (such as severe drowsiness or yellow skin).
