Over-the-Counter Claritin

Claritin® (loratadine) is a nonprescription medicine commonly used for relieving allergy symptoms, such as itchy throat, sneezing, or runny nose. It can also be used to treat itching due to hives.

Compared to other antihistamines that are available over-the-counter (OTC), Claritin is less likely to cause drowsiness. It comes in several different forms (including tablets, liquid-filled capsules, syrup, chewable tablets, and orally disintegrating tablets) and is typically taken once a day.

Before taking any over-the-counter Claritin products, you should talk to your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or have liver disease. In order to help minimize the risk of drug interactions with Claritin, it is also important to let your healthcare provider know about all other medications you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements.
