Claritin Vs. Clarinex

Claritin® (loratadine) and Clarinex® (desloratadine) are both medications that are licensed for the treatment of allergy symptoms. Both are antihistamines that work by blocking the effects of histamine, chemicals that cause sneezing, itching, and irritation.

Many people are unclear about the difference between Claritin vs. Clarinex. While both drugs can be used to relieve itching due to hives, Clarinex is also approved for treating chronic hives. Even though the two medications come in tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, and syrup form, Claritin comes in more strengths and forms.

The primary difference between Claritin versus Clarinex is that one (Claritin) can be found over the counter, while the other is available by prescription only.
