The antihistamine works by inhibiting the effects of histamine, to help relieve sneezing, itchy nose or throat, runny nose, watery eyes, and itching caused by hives. Compared to most non-prescription antihistamines, Claritin is much less likely to cause drowsiness.
There are several different forms of Claritin: RediTabs® (orally disintegrating tablets), liquid-filled capsules, chewable tablets, regular tablets, and syrup. The medication is generally taken once daily, although Claritin RediTabs (12-hour tablets) are taken twice a day.
Even though Claritin can be obtained without a prescription, you should consult your healthcare provider before using this antihistamine if you have any other existing medical conditions. Talk to your healthcare provider prior to taking Claritin if you are pregnant, have liver disease, or have kidney disease.
