Claritin and Breastfeeding
Studies on breastfeeding and Claritin have shown that the medication does pass through breast milk. However, it does so in such a small amount that it is unlikely to have any effects on a nursing infant. Although most healthcare providers consider it safe to take this medication while breastfeeding, you should still watch for any side effects or changes in your child.
Claritin® (loratadine) passes through breast milk in humans. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider about taking Claritin.
Studies have shown that Claritin does pass through breast milk. However, it passes through in very low amounts, which are probably too low to have any effect on a nursing infant. Many healthcare providers consider Claritin to be safe for breastfeeding women. If your healthcare provider recommends that you take the drug while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child.
You should talk with your healthcare provider about breastfeeding and Claritin. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
