Benadryl
® (
diphenhydramine hydrochloride) is an antihistamine product commonly used for treating
allergy symptoms and
insomnia. It comes in many different forms and strengths, and is available both over the counter and by prescription (depending on the particular product).
Most Benadryl products can be purchased over the counter without a prescription, but there are several prescription-only products, including:
- Benadryl capsules (25 mg and 50 mg, available only in generic form)
- Benadryl injection (prescription-only)
- Benadryl elixir (12.5 mg per teaspoonful, available only in generic form).
There is also one brand of Benadryl capsules that is available over the counter. It is approved for adults and sold under the name Benadryl Allergy Kapseals® capsules (25 mg).
