Is Astepro Safe While Breastfeeding?

Currently, it is unknown if Astepro^™ (azelastine hydrochloride) passes through breast milk in humans or if it is safe for use during breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Astepro.

What Does the Research Say?

No studies have been done to see if Astepro passes through breast milk in humans. However, based on its chemical structure, it is likely that Astepro passes through breast milk. Even though Astepro is a nasal spray, a significant amount of the medication reaches the bloodstream, so it is possible that it may pass through breast milk. If it does pass through breast milk, possible side effects in breastfed infants may include drowsiness and irritability. If your healthcare provider recommends taking Astepro while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child. In some situations, a non-sedating antihistamine (one that is less likely to cause drowsiness) may be a better choice for breastfeeding women.
