Astelin Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Astelin is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
 
Alcohol
People are generally advised to avoid alcohol while taking Astelin. Combining the two may increase the risk of drowsiness and decrease your alertness.
 
Barbiturates
Astelin and barbiturates can both cause drowsiness, and taking them together increases this risk. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Cimetidine
Cimetidine can increase the level of Astelin in your blood, possibly increasing your risk of Astelin side effects. Your healthcare provider may recommend that you use one of the many cimetidine alternatives that do not interact with Astelin.
 
Narcotics or Opiates
Combining Astelin with narcotics or opiates can increase the risk of drowsiness and decrease your alertness. Talk with your healthcare provider before using Astelin with a narcotic or opiate.
 
Other Antihistamines
Using Astelin with another antihistamine is generally not recommended. Many antihistamines cause drowsiness, and taking more than one antihistamine at the same time usually increases this risk. Be aware that many non-prescription cold, cough, allergy, and flu products contain an antihistamine.
