Astelin and Weight Gain

There are a number of potential side effects that may occur with the use of Astelin, and weight gain is an unlikely, albeit possible, side effect. In clinical studies, up to 2 percent of people using the allergy medicine gained weight. If you are taking Astelin and weight gain occurs, you can try limiting your alcohol intake, exercising more, and eating heart-healthy foods.

Astelin and Weight Gain: An Overview

Weight gain appears to be a possible but unlikely side effect of Astelin® (azelastine hydrochloride). This data comes from clinical trials in which Astelin was studied extensively and side effects were carefully documented.

Side Effects and Clinical Trials

Before medicines are approved, they must go through several clinical studies, where thousands of people are given a particular medicine and compared to a group of people not given the medicine (who take a placebo, or "sugar pill," instead). In these studies, side effects are always carefully documented. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. Side effects are then usually separated into those that occur in more than 1 percent of people (common side effects) and those that occur in less than 1 percent of people (rare side effects).
In these studies, up to 2 percent of people taking Astelin for nasal allergies gained weight, compared to none of the people who were taking a placebo nasal spray that contained no active ingredient. It is important to note, however, that this difference is small and may be due to chance.

Astelin and Weight Gain: Suggestions

If you are noticing weight gain with Astelin, talk to your healthcare provider. He or she may look for other causes. If the weight gain remains unexplained, your healthcare provider may give you some suggestions, such as eating heart-healthy foods, exercising more, and limiting your intake of alcohol. If the weight gain continues, your healthcare provider may also recommend other lifestyle changes or possibly switch you to another medicine.
