Allegra
® (
fexofenadine hydrochloride) is a medication that can be prescribed to relieve symptoms of
hay fever and to treat chronic hives and itching.
Allegra tablets are approved for use in adults and children six years if age and older. There are also two different forms, orally disintegrating tablets and an oral solution, that are approved for use in younger children.
The drug works by blocking the effects of histamine, which can reduce
allergy symptoms and alleviate itching due to hives. In clinical studies, people taking Allegra tablets for hay fever felt an improvement in symptoms, such as itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, and runny nose.
While most people tolerate this antihistamine well, side effects are possible. Some of the most common side effects that have been reported with Allegra include
back pain, coughing, respiratory tract infection (such as the
common cold or flu), and
headache.
